Christ is the head of the church, his body.

Ephesians 1:20-23 but specifically verses 22-23.  And God placed all thigns under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

Because of His sacrifice on the cross, Christ needs every member of the body of church to fulfill their purpose in uplifting Christ to the world.  Therefore we need to follow the teaching of Ephesians 5:23 For the husband is head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

This teaching is not saying man should rule over his wife with an iron fist, but that in everything we do we should submit ourselves to Christ as Christ submitted himself to the will of His father when he was on earth.
