Three is CompanyTwo’s Company, Three’s a Crowd

by Kim Larsen

I’ve often heard this phrase, and even used it myself, to describe friends, couples, etc. It always seemed to me that especially as I was growing up, that my best friend and I got along very well until the third friend joined our group. There was always one friend on the “outs” and the other two would be besties and then the next week it would change. It led to a lot of trouble most of the time. My poor parents gained a few gray hairs through all of that!

I learned something new this week. This old saying Two’s company three’s a crowd is wrong. A third person is actually what is best for a relationship of friends. If the third person is accepted, self centeredness will give way to a more selfless quality of love. Now you not only have to receive the love of your friend, but you also have to accept that your first friend is also friends with another. You have to accept that all the attention is not focused on you. For this reason 3 is the minimum numeric value of love in its purest form. Where there is only one-person love cannot occur. When there are two, each is the sole recipient of the others attention, giving potential for self centeredness. But the moment there are 3 each person must also humbly defer attention to the third and each must occupy the position of the third person to the other. Pure selflessness can now occur. 1 John 4:16 “God is love.” I Corinthians 13:4-5 “Love is not self seeking.” God is an eternal fellowship shared by 3 distinct divine persons who are of one essential nature, one in purpose and in character. Now you know why God made us to procreate and two can become three. Two’s company, three is selfless love. Just like our Creator.

  1. Nice blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it from somewhere? A theme like yours with a few simple adjustements would really make my blog stand out. Please let me know where you got your theme. Thanks a lot

    1. Hi,
Thank you for the kind words.
The blog theme is an old wordpress theme called Parament. It looks good, easy to use but does have a limitation in it only allows you the use of one menu.
I have thought about and explore changing to another theme, but none seem to work as well as this.

Thank you so much for stopping by and hope you will come back often.
