False Teachers II Peter 2:1-3:7
Have you ever sat in a public place, and while there, listen to someone private phone conversation? Depending on who the person is, it is sometimes difficult to determine who is on the other end of that conversation. Without knowing both persons, it is difficult to know if they are happy, frustrated, brother and sister, significant other or a business associate. For often conversations, one sided conversations are just that, one sided.
Sometimes it would seem that reading II Peter is a little like hearing only half the conversation. Sometimes we can understand that there is a problem and even what that problem is, which is false teachers, but we are faced with incomplete ideas or thoughts because some of the issues raised are only familiar to the author and whom he original wrote the letter to.
Peter is concerned, yet it seems like a one-sided conversation, but he is concerned with false teachers. Perhaps the question we should ask is, “Is he warning against false teachers in his day, our day or both.” The answer is, both. In our next post we will look at some of the things false teachers teach, which will help us recognize if there are any false teachers that we need to be careful about today, in the age we live in.
What do the False Teachers Teach?
II Peter 2:1-3, 10:33; II Peter 3:1-7
II Peter 2:1 quickly starts off this message against false teachers by stating; “But there were also false prophets among the people even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.
Peter makes in incredible statement by saying that since the time Israel became a nation, there were prophets among them that were false prophets. These prophets brought swift destruction upon the people and also upon themselves.
Peter further warns that not only where these false prophets among the people from their beginning, but that they also exist to this present day, spreading their false teachings, false doctrine of the gospel to the people, mixing truth with error brining destruction upon the very people that Jesus had come to rescue from sin. As these false prophets of old brought destruction upon themselves and the people, so these false teachers of today will cause the same thing to happen.
Our next post will be at 2:00 pm this afternoon and part 11c will follow at 8:00 pm.
