Exodus 29:20

….Then you shall kill the ram and take some of its blood and put it on the tip of the right ear of Aaron and on the tip of the right ear of his sons, on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of the right foot, and sprinkle the blood all around on the altar.

Symbolism is so prevalent in the Bible. I love it when I read a verse and I stop and wonder to myself, “What does that mean”? I know then, that I need to dig a little deeper. Exodus 29:20 is one of those verses. This appears to be a dedication ceremony for Aaron and his sons as priests in the sanctuary. Blood was used in all of the sacrifices as a picture of the coming lamb of God pointing forward to the day when the Son of God would be the sacrifice for our sin. But why the ear lobe, thumb and big toe?

After doing a little digging I learned that the ear lobe symbolized that one must attend to what has been commanded. The thumb is the origin of all activity in the hand. The Right hand symbolizes action, strength, authority and sovereignty. The phrase right hand is mentioned 168 times in the Bible. This is no coincidence. The fully consecrated must be pure in words and actions in life, for words are judged by hearing, the hand the symbol of action and the foot the pilgrimage of life.

Do you remember that little song that we sang? Oh be careful little ears what you hear! Oh be careful little hands what you do! Oh be careful little feet where you go! A very simple song with very deep meaning. Our Great High Priest is our example. Hebrews 4:15 tells us that Jesus sympathizes with our weaknesses and was in all points tempted as we are yet without sin. The sincere contrite soul is precious in the sight of God. He places his own signet upon man, not by their rank, not by their wealth, not by their intellectual greatness, but by their oneness with Christ. The Lord of glory is satisfied with those who are meek and lowly in heart. Thou hast also given me, said David, the shield of thy salvation…. And thy gentleness as an element in the human character hath made me great.

  1. First of all I want to say awesome blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to ask if you do not mind. I was interested to find out how you center yourself and clear your head before writing. I have had a hard time clearing my mind in getting my ideas out there. I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are lost just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or tips? Many thanks!

    1. Hi,
I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. Your question how do I prepare to write is a good question.
The answer depends upon what I am writing. If I am writing a sermon or for this blog, it all starts with prayer, then research and then putting my finds down on page.
prayer, preparation in the form of Bible study, and more prayer are the keys in writing as they are the keys to living a Christian life. Prayer and asking God to put the right words or thought into your mind is key. But I cannot say it enough, prayer, prayer and then more prayer.
Often when I am done writing, I do not like what I have written, but strangely those have been some of the best sermons or blog posts.
But it all starts with prayer.
      Blessings,
      Pastor Lester

  2. May I simply just say what a comfort to find somebody who really understands what they’re talking about over the internet. You certainly understand how to bring a problem to light and make it important. More and more people should check this out and understand this side of the story. I was surprised you aren’t more popular given that you most certainly have the gift.

  5. Everything posted made a bunch of sense. However, what about this? what if you were to create a killer title? I am not suggesting your content isn’t good., but suppose you added a post title that grabbed a person’s attention? I mean %BLOG_TITLE% is a little plain. You could peek at Yahoo’s front page and watch how they create post titles to grab people to open the links. You might add a video or a related picture or two to get readers interested about what you’ve got to say. Just my opinion, it would make your posts a little bit more interesting.
