Rusty Treasures
Matthew 6:20-21 says, “But lay up for yourselves Treasure in Heaven where neither moth nor rust destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will be your heart also.”
Treasure can really be just about anything. The things that we treasure the most we keep hidden from view, or close to our person depending on what it is. It’s interesting that Jesus is telling to lay up treasure in Heaven isn’t it? He knows how we humans love to collect things !
The underground parking garage where I live is a very intriguing place when I stop and think about it. There are storage lockers enclosed in cages, so that you can see what is inside. Treasures! It is very enlightening to see what others keep, it’s different for each individual. Old furniture, art, china, books, or as in my husband’s locker, neatly stacked tool chests filled with his favorite, can’t part with tools.
Jesus describes the kind of treasure that we should lay up in store by the term crown. There are five kinds of crowns.
- The imperishable crown : 1 Corinthians 9:25-25
- Crown of rejoicing: 1 Thessalonians 2:19
- Crown of glory : 1 Peter 5:4
- Crown of Righteousness : 2 Timothy 4:8
- Crown of Life : Revelation 2:10
All of these treasures are rewarded to a Christian with purpose, and perseverance. In putting Jesus first and keeping our eyes focused on what is important, and looking forward to his appearing.
In the last days God’s people will free themselves from entanglement and will stand before the world as monuments of God’s image. He desires for us to be rewarded not with treasures that will rust or corrode here, but with crowns of finest gold! These crowns we will gladly cast at the feet of Jesus when we see Him face to face! Amen!!
