A Call For Unity
Psalm 133:1-3. Behold how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! 2 It is like the precious oil upon the head, Running down on the beard, The beard of Aaron, Running down on the edge of His garments. 3 It is like the dew of Hermon, Descending upon the mountains of Zion; For there the LORD commanded the blessing – Life forevermore.
The Psalmist begins by stating, “Behold, how good and how pleasant.” I can think of little that is as pleasant as brothers and sisters dwelling together in unity. But this should go beyond our Christian brothers and sisters, for in reality this is a call for all mankind to become brothers and sisters, and to dwell together in unity! When God, looks down from heaven, he does not see multiple races, he only sees the human race, therefore we should draw near together as brothers and sisters and dwell in unity together.
From one family, God caused them to procreate, thus all mankind is linked together. So, the Psalmist calls for there to be unity amongst us all and when there is unity, how pleasant and refreshing it is.
When the disciples in the upper room grew together in brotherly love, kneeling and praying together, there was such unity that the Holy Spirit was poured out upon them and they set out to change the world.
The Psalmist says, that when we come together in unity it is like precious oil that is poured out upon the head. So much so that it runs down the beard. This unity that brings about the pouring of this precious oil not only runs down the beard but soon engulfs the entire being as the oil runs off the garments and fragrance of the oil encompasses all those around. This is a symbol that the person has been anointed by the Holy Spirit. There can be no partial pouring out of the Holy Spirit, there can only be a complete outpouring of the spirit that encompasses us all when we have come together as brothers and sisters in unity.
The Psalmist goes one step further by saying, It is like the dew of Hermon, descending upon the mountains of Zion; For there the LORD commanded the blessing.
The “Dew of Hermon” is a symbol of the refreshment that comes from the brotherly love born of heaven. This love is like the dew that refreshes and revives a dry and thirsty land. It is when we in brotherly love aided by the outpouring of the oil (Holy Spirit) which is available in its fullest measure to those that dwell together in brotherly and sisterly unity in Christ’s love that the promise of reward is given.
What is this reward? It is the blessing – the blessing of Life forevermore spent in unity with God and our brothers and sisters.
