(Zechariah 2)

In Zechariah’s next vision, he sees a man carrying a measuring line.

In the ancient world, measuring a city was the first step in rebuilding it. Surveyors would measure the boundaries in preparation for new construction.

Jerusalem had been devastated by the Babylonian invasion decades earlier. Now that the people had returned from exile, rebuilding was underway.

So the man with the measuring line appears to be preparing to measure the city so it can be rebuilt.

But before the measuring can be completed, another angel intervenes with a surprising message.

Jerusalem will grow so large that it cannot be contained by walls.

In ancient cities, walls were essential. They provided protection from invading armies and raiders. A city without walls was vulnerable and exposed.

Yet God says something remarkable:

“I will be a wall of fire all around her.”

Instead of stone walls, God promises His own presence as the protection of the city.

This is a powerful reminder that the true security of God’s people has never been their defenses or their institutions.

Their true security is God Himself.

This promise points beyond the immediate situation of Zechariah’s day. It anticipates a future when God’s people will expand far beyond the boundaries of Jerusalem.

Ultimately this theme appears again in the book of Revelation, where the New Jerusalem descends from heaven and God dwells with His people.

The protection of God’s people does not come from walls.

It comes from the presence of God.

For believers today, this is a comforting truth. We often look for security in visible things—systems, plans, or human strength.

But Scripture reminds us that our ultimate safety rests in the Lord.

Reflection

When God surrounds His people, they have greater protection than any wall could provide.
